The University and the Polytechnic Institute The Modern building of the University from Timisoara is another edifice signed by the architect Hans Fackelmann. The project was done in two phases; the first in 1950, the second in 1964-1965. The building is one of the first from the modern architectural works from Romania; it serves the purpose for which it has been created. On its facade, there is a mosaic representing Nicolae Balcescu and Mihai Eminescu; it is the masterpiece of Stefan Szonyi (1919-1967). The entrance hall walls are done in marble. The science, art and the culture are symbolically represented on these marble walls. The left wall is dedicated to the literature and art; a woman symbolizing a torch is the dominant figure; at the right and left of this woman there are symbols representing the evolution of writing referring to the history of civilizations and universal culture. The right wall is dedicated to the science; the dominant symbols are an astronaut, satellites, an atom, a spiral, and other signs reminding the human investigative nature, the continuous development and modernization. The work was accomplished by Romulus Nufin (born in 1932) and Gabriel Kazinczi (born in 1942). A monumental marble staircase links the two stories and the "Aula Magna" (the auditorium). The hall before the entrance to "Aula Magna" (has the walls ornated with a mosaic representing important scenes and personalities from the Romanian history; this is the masterpiece of Adalbert Luca and Leon Vreme [40]. Not far from the University, on the same boulevard, there is the campus, the dorms, cafeterias, and sport terrain, surrounded by the boulevards Vasile Parvan, Mihai Viteazul, Victor babes, and Dalia Street. Let s go back, now, to the Bishopric bridge (the bridge Mihai Viteazul), built in 1914, where the boulevard with the name of the greatest Romanian king Mihai Viteazul (1593-1601) begins. A big architectural complex can be seen at the corner of the boulevards Vasile Parvan and Mihai Viteazul. It is the residence of the Technical University from Timisoara known as the "Polytechnica". The older buildings were started in 1923 after the plans of the architect Duiliu Marcu. The dorms were built in 1927, and the cafeteria in 1930. Victor Vlad designed the auxiliary buildings. The complex, in red brick, abounds in Romanian style decorative ornaments done in white. The cafeteria is a historical monument due to its typical decorative elements. Two new wings were added in the 60s to the old main building. The last modern addition was done in 1976. The new complex of the Electrotechnical Faculty was designed by the architect Petru Svoboda. In front of this building there is a bust with an inscription that reads only: "Traian Lalescu (1882-1929). The first rector of the Superior Polytechnic School from Timisoara, October 1920-1921." Traian Lalescu got his Ph.D. in Mathematics at Sorbonne. He was a professor at the Science Faculty and the Superior Polytechnic School from Bucharest; he founded the Superior Polytechnic School from Timisoara; he published a lot of scientific papers and was a man that dedicated his whole life to his country and public well being. His bust was raised in 1930.
